Movie Review: The House of Flying Daggers

Okay, this was supposed to be Wimbledon but my friend didn't want to see that, so... Luckily, this movie's pretty good, too.

Mei and JinThis is definitely not going to be one of my favorite Zhang Ziyi movies, but it just might be my favorite Takeshi Kaneshiro one. That's not to say that Kaneshiro's performance was better than Ziyi's, but really more to make the point that I like to see Kaneshiro in a love story and Ziyi in a martial arts film, which this movie both is.

Admittedly, it doesn't have the most original plot.  It's the typical, boy-spy rescues girl-rebel and seduces her to get information only to fall in love with her for real, and this jeoparizes his whole mission. Pretty basic if you ask me. Although there was a somewhat unexpected twist at the end, but it was a bit too unexpected, that I think the story could've done better without it. But I guess it was cool to see Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau, who were friends at the beginning of the story, have the last battle in the film. And it was a great fighting scene too. All of them were, especially the one when they were using bamboo sticks.

I'm just disappointed really, because although there were plenty of 'kilig' moments between Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and Mei (Zhang Ziyi) at the beginning, and Andy Lau performed the role of 'jealous boyfriend' excellently, the story lacked the usual amount of mystery I always found to be present in Asian films. And what was with the painting-like backgrounds, which were all very pretty indeed, but somehow didn't look real. Or maybe that was intentional for some symbolism I didn't understand. The snow at the end was pretty weird too, and I can't quite believe that Mei can really live that long, even if she is one of the best fighters in the House of Flying Daggers (name of rebel group). Jin and Mei fighting the governor's menIt was also kind of weird that Nia (Head of the House of...) assigned Mei to be the one to kill Jin, for no particular reason. She could've sent anybody to do the job. And, being leader and all, I'd have thought her wise enough to know that Mei had already fallen for Jin and would let him go. I thought it was part of another evil plan or something. But apparently, it wasn't, and Nia never appeared on screen again.

It's really lucky that the fighting scenes here are so great it can make up for the weak story, so I guess it's still worth the time and money, but I'd take Hero and Crouching Tiger... over it any day. If only Takeshi Kaneshiro wasn't so darn gorgeous. Hehe.
