I am almost 100% positive that those of you who know me personally, are aware that no matter how much of a birthday person I am, I never really liked the date of my birthday. I've always been a bit biased against September, because there aren't really any famous special occassions in it like Christmas in December, Halloween on October, or Valentine's Day on February. The only thing that characterizes September, at least from what I've observed, is the abnormally large number of people celebrating their birthdays on this month.
For a long time, I've thought of this as a disadvantage because not only do the people born on this month (like me) have to share their birth dates with at least 2 other people that they know (which is really so unfair because birthdays are supposed to be the one day that's it's all about the celebrant), but they also have to get used to their friends giving cheaper presents (as compared to those who celebrate birthdays on other months) because they have to budget their money as they have several other celebrants to give presents to in the same month. And maybe I'm wrong, but all these just seem to make the days in this month less special somehow, and I hate it when somebody's birthday isn't special. Recent events though, I guess, has made me re-think some things over.
Before this month ended, I was able to see (and talk to) my relatives from Davao, my High School friends (one I haven't had contact with in over a year), my blockmates (I haven't seen them since we returned the togas we used for Graduation), and even my relatives from Germany. And it's mostly because there are several reasons to meet up and celebrate this month--a lot of us are celebrating our birthdays.
So gifts were given, greetings were shouted out, and despite having too many people to talk to that it's impossible to have a decent conversation with each of them before the day ends, it was really quite fun to hear my name spoken whenever somebody inevitably enumerates the birthday celebrants for this month. At least, a lot more fun than being one of those who just greets everyone and doesn't receive a greeting in return. It feels pretty good to be part of the reason a lot of people are celebrating.
Okay, so maybe this makes me seem like too much of an attention-seeker. But I don't care. I'm glad I finally found something that makes September unique. It's the month most people celebrate their birthdays on. And a month full of celebrations, even just small ones, is bound to be considered a great one.
September should be called 'Birthday Season', kind of like how December is 'Christmas Season', etc. so that it finally has a title. I think it deserves it anyway.
