hol·i·day n. - A day free from work that one may spend at leisure, especially a day on which custom or the law dictates a halting of general business activity to commemorate or celebrate a particular event.
What'd I tell 'ya? Didn't I say that fate was my friend? I mean, I've gotten used to the idea that I would have to go to work, even on holidays, by this time. It just comes with working for a multi-national company (not to brag, because really, it sucks, having to work on holidays?!). It's just the way things are so you'll just have to suck it up.
I wasn't even complaining about this particular holiday. From the beginning of the month, my mind was set. I've even already forgotten that the 12th of June was a holiday. (How many times have I mentioned the word "holiday"?) But things have a way of happening when you least expect them. I guess that's just really how the world works, and I'm just going to have to suck it up.
How did it happen that it is the first time, ever since I've started my new job, that I get to not need to go to the office?
I don't think I've mentioned it before here, but I really like taking note and remembering, moments. (If you've seen Orlando Bloom's Elizabethtown before, I'm talking about something like his "last look" thing.) What I mean is, the few seconds or milliseconds wheren in you realize that something good (or bad) is happening, or about to happen, or has happened, and you actually notice what you're feeling, be it bad or good, and time seems to move slower... Those are the 'moments' I'm talking about.
I had one just a few minutes ago. While our department was having a meeting about whether we would be going to work on Monday or not. It's a holiday on Monday in Manila, you see. And although it's usually already a given that we have work on the holidays, we still always have a meeting about it to make sure, and to remind each other (especially the new ones like me) of the overtime forms and stuff. It was the first time in a meeting though that I heard our supervisor say:
"As long as one person for each office, comes in on Monday, it's fine."
Normally, there are 2 people assigned to an office. So it was a dead giveaway that there was a chance that I wouldn't have to go to work. Except, being the newbie and therefore probationary employee, I expected that the free day wouldn't go to me. Until she said:
"So, for the Sydney office, since Peter was the one who went to work on May 1, Marella would be the one coming in on Monday."
May 1 was the only holiday last month. And I came to the office then. There were like, only 5 people at work, but one of them was me.
Enter, the moment I was talking about. I immediately realized it would be me, who wouldn't have to go to work. I was already trying to keep myself from smiling wide, even before she stated what was already obvious to me:
"Since Ida was here last May 1, Alpha will be the one to come in on Monday."
I really didn't have to ask, but I did anyway, just to make sure: "So, I don't have to go to work on Monday?"
And she replied, "Yes, it's your holiday then."
"You mean, it's a day where I can be free from work that I may spend at leisure, and be a part of the halting of general business activity to commemorate or celebrate a particular event?" I didn't have to say.
I'm going to have a 3-day weekend! Wheee!!! XD My friend was right:
"Magical things just have a way of happening on Fridays."
