Portal

Did I ever tell you that one of my greatest dreams is to discover a portal into another dimension? Or maybe another time, or even the same dimension and time, but another place? Like a secret passage. And it doesn't even have to be like those invisible portals of energy, or anything supernatural really, but even the simplest and most cliché of secret passages like, staircases behind the bookcase, or rotating fireplaces... One of my greatest regrets about our house, ever since I was a kid, is how it doesn't have any of that. Of course, there's probably really no need for it, but still, I wish there was some place that I could go to that seems completely detached from the rest of the world.

Most of my time in college, I think, was spent roaming around my university looking for such a place. I never found one. Perhaps it's because of this, which is why I never felt at home in that university, despite my having gone there everyday for 3 consecutive years (except during the summer/Christmas/between-terms breaks, of course, but believe me, the trimestral system does not have many of that). The closest I found was the closed staircase in the new building, but it was only there on my final year, and since the janitors kept using it, it was hardly detached.

In case your curious, my "portal" before college was the mezzanine/stock room of the publication office at the ground floor of our high school building. Whenever we would stay in school after classes, to work on the newspaper, there would always be a time when I and my friends would go up there and gossip. Sometimes, we'd sit on the stairs, but I remember a time that we sat in a circle, and it reminded me of those sleep-over gossip scenes they have in teeny-bopper movies.

Since then I haven't found many places like that. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I like to believe that the culprit would be the routine of life. Because when you finish school, you step into the real world, and in an office, a secret passage is probably the last thing that you could find, unless you're a librarian or a curator or a professor or, someone working in my building who had breakfast a quarter before 10AM and decided to look at the ice cream shop next door to McDonald's?

Not that I actually found a secret passage, but I really think I came close this time.

The restaurant at the back of the McDonald's branch next to our building is a sushi bar. And beside it, an ice cream shop. Perhaps because it was early when my friend and I  went there, both places were empty.

What made it eerie though, even in broad daylight, was the music. The sushi bar had tables outside, and so naturally, it had speakers outside too, such that, as we were approaching, we could already hear soft music. An unfamiliar tune played on an unfamiliar instrument; it sounded like something you'd hear from an old music box. And with each step we took, it got louder, and louder, and louder.

We got to the restaurant entrance. Since it was no longer along the street, you couldn't hear the cars passing by. The 'We're Open' sign was hanging on the door, and you could see from the outside that the food assembly line (you know those places in Japan where the food goes around the table and you just get what you want while sitting on the side? Check out a picture
here.) was moving. But there were no waiters in sight, no customers, nothing. The glare from the sun on the glass walls even made it seem as if there really wasn't anything inside the place. As if it was all just an illusion. The light can always play tricks on our eyes after all.

I half expected my friend to be gone when I turned to look. I thought something had happened as I was walking closer to the music, that somehow, as it got louder, I was moving farther and farther away from the real world and into something that looked exactly the same, but of course, was completely different. I was preparing myself to see something totally unexpected; a pig, crossing the street, a little green man, a white rabbit looking at his pocket watch... But it didn't happen.

My friend was still there, and when we opened the doors to the ice cream shop, there were two women behind the counter, asking for our orders.

I guess it was just a weird time to go to a sushi bar or an ice cream shop, that's why nobody was there. But wouldn't it have been so cool if I did suddenly find myself alone, and the creepy music would follow me everywhere I go -- going back to the office, riding the bus home (would there even be buses?)... And then I'd meet someone looking for a way to go back to the real world too, and we'd discover that we could actually move things with our minds and all that. Hehehe.

Another time, perhaps?
