Science of Love

There is such a thing as 'Science of Love' where scholars and other academic types do surveys and readings, etc. to understand and maybe predict 'love', just like what they do with animals or the weather... But as the character ofAngelina Jolie in one of her movies (I forgot the title, but Ryan Philippe, Gillian Anderson, Madeline Stowe, Sean Connery and Dennis Quaid were all in it) said, "talking about love, is like dancing about architecture." After watching Someone Like You and lots of other romantic comedies that try to explain how love works, somehow I'm also beginning to believe, that Angeline Jolie's character was right. Even if, just a few months ago, I'd been campaigning like a 'Down With Love' girl from that Renee Zellweger movie, saying that you don't actually need someone to be in love with to be in love, because you can get the same high, just from hearing love songs or watching romantic movies, even without associating the subjects/characters of those things to somebody in particular.

I told that to my friend, but since she'd just gotten her heart broken she told me that, although my idea seemed bright and plausible and that she didn't want to discourage me, she just had to say that, yes, watching movies and hearing love songs are great, but having someone to love is really so much better that it's a guarantee that there can't be any substitute for it. Because it's that different.

So I come back to the Science of Love and ask, so if love can't be synthesized, if there's no substitute for it, is there a specific way to get or experience it? How does a person know that he/she is in love? How do any of us know that somebody's in love with us? Are there specific symptoms?
Standards? Guidelines? Checklists? I suppose 'love scientists' would answer yes. And since up until recently, I'd thought myself an authority on that topic, it's likely that I would answer yes also. But now, I think I kind of believe what most people have been saying, that you really can't ever tell.

Blaise Pascal said it, "The heart has its reasons, which reason does not understand." And now, I think I'm almost a believer. Love, can never be figured out, and therefore cannot be explained, and so is definitely unpredictable. And when a couple gets together and lasts, the reason wouldn't be their looks, or their personalities, or their money... They just happen to be.

It just shouldn't be asked why one loves. It's almost like asking why the sun shines, or why the rain falls... Okay, so science can answer that. The sun shines because the light that the fire that's produced by the gases around the star, reaches the Earth; and the rain falls because the moisture in the atmosphere is too much that water has to fall. But science can only go so far with these explanations, reasonable and logical though they may be. Why is there gas on the sun's surface anyway? And why should water have to evaporate? Why do some people find everything about a certain person attractive? Why do some girls prefer guys who are stupid? Science can only go so far.

So all the essays, all the stories, all the theories, everything I thought I'd figured out about love, probably are just at the tip of the iceberg on a bottomless ocean, which you can't know what's underneath unless you take the risk and dive down deep. And if you get afraid, before you're in too deep, maybe you can swim back up. Or else you drown. But surely, that's not the only possiblity. Who knows what lurks at the depths of the ocean anyway? It could be killer whales, but maybe it's a whole new world, because with love, you really can't ever tell.

I found this 'essay' as I was sorting through the papers underneath my desk. It was written behind a reaction paper I did for one of my subjects last term so I'm guessing I probably wrote this sometime around February-March. For those who don't understand, the short version of the background on why I wrote this is this: I used to believe that everything can be explained scientifically, that even in love, there can be mathematical equations, or that knowing the statistics of how many people get broken-hearted per year or stuff like that would actually be helpful in actual instances. Actually, to some level, I do still believe that, but the point of this essay really is that also to a certain level, I don't, and think that talking about love, explaining it, trying to predict it, really is like, dancing about architecture.
