Is Fate With Me Or Against Me?

Admit it, there are just some days that you feel like giving up on life and killing yourself. It doesn't even matter what the reason is for your thinking that way, it's just a fact of life. Everybody, at one point in their lives, surely, has wished themselves to drop dead.

That point in my life was around late November last year. It wasn't really because I had a huge problem or anything. It was really just because I was so tired and so stressed out from schoolwork that I just wanted it all to stop, to end. And so I thought that it'd really be so much easier if I just died, so I wouldn't have to worry anymore about all the term papers I had to write, and tests I had to study for. So there I was sitting in my room, thinking of ways on how to end my life painlessly, when I remembered what one of my friends told me. She said that whenever she was depressed and felt like killing herself, she'd always remind herself that she couldn't die yet, because she hadn't yet met Brad Pitt in person. Now, shallow that thought might be, she said that it actually really worked. Whenever she remembered it, she'd have some kind of renewed energy and a strong will to live. And so I decided to give it a try.

Since I'm not really a big fan of Brad Pitt, I thought about other celebrities I really wanted to meet. Matt Damon and Orlando Bloom came to mind, but I thought, No, I had to think of someone whom I really really liked--enough, for me to be inspired to live, for me to work hard to attain that goal. Now remember, this was November 2003, and I saw the replay of X-Games IX, October 2003. So it wasn't long before I thought of Takeshi Yasutoko, and my sudden addiction to him.

And it was decided. I told myself, and repeated it constantly whenever I felt down, that I cannot, and will not let myself die, unless I meet Takeshi Yasutoko in person.

Again, this was on late November of 2003. I keep repeating this because, (and the sense of my title's about to come up) December 5, 6 & 7 2003 (only around 2 weeks after I made the decision) were the days of the Asian X-tour in Manila--where the Yasutoko Brothers would be performing (for the first time) in the Philippines. Wasn't the timing just perfect?

It wasn't just the timing that was convenient, though. It was also the location. See, from the Asian X-Games website, I found out that the Asian X-tour was actually supposed to be held at the open area near Fort Bonifacio. But for some reason, they moved it into Filinvest, Alabang. The relevance of this is, Fort Bonifacio is about 25 kilometers away from where I live, and had the X-tour been held there, I wouldn't have been able to go. But Alabang, isn't even 5 kilometers away from my house. See? Wasn't it as if the world was just taunting me to go?

But the work of fate to get me to meet Takeshi doesn't end there. See, even though I knew where Takeshi would be, I didn't know exactly what time he'd be there. And I'm not really that patient a person to hang around a site for an entire day just to wait for him. (Well, actually I am, but I didn't want to wait around alone, so I asked my sister to come with me, and she's not patient enough--she's not patient at all even, and even only agreed to come if I promised to treat her to a movie before we went to the site). So my sister, her friend and I went first to watch a movie (oddly enough, I don't remember anymore what movie it was), and when it ended, we headed for the site the Asian X-tour was supposed to be. It was around 4pm, but we had no idea what time Takeshi's exhibition was going to be, and actually what we decided was, if he was there when we got there, then we'd watch, but if he wasn't, then we'd go home.

When we got there, it was exactly the time Takeshi had just been called to do his afternoon show. Seems like the work of fate if you ask me.

So anyway, I got to watch his performance, and just half an hour after it, got to get in line to get his autograph. I lined up twice, and on the second time, asked him to write his name in Japanese too instead of just his usual signature which had his name in script and a complicated underline (that's a bit like his name in Kanji characters) below it. And since he shook hands with everyone who asked for his autograph, I got to shake his hand twice. Now surely, that can be considered as meeting him in person.

And this all happened, a mere two weeks after I made the resolution to not die unless I meet (I think I even said to myself then that even if I just caught a glimpse of him that's not through a camera) Takeshi Yasutoko.

So now I'm wondering, is fate with me because it's granted me my one wish before I die, or against me, because this actually means that I've nothing left to live for?

Either way, I'm still very much alive now, and very happy that I got to meet Takeshi before we both have grown too old to be able to do anything. But the thought is still at the back of my head, that if
I died this very moment, it would actually be okay, because I've accomplished the one thing I've set myself to do.

Maybe it's shallow, but how many people really meet their idols before they die anyway? It's not that easy a thing to do, right? But then, it was for me, so... Well, that just brings me back to my title.

Here are some pictures from the event. I'm not the one who took these, (except the poster with the autograph) I just found these on the net. But anyway, see how Takeshi's shirt is of a different color in each picture? Hehe. Just noticing. ^_^

Takeshi, signing autographs.

This is how the posters look like after he signs it, or this is how mine looks like, with his name written in Hiragana below his signature.

Takeshi, flying. The trees at the back line a road leading to the hotel in the next picture.

Takeshi doing an invert. The building on the background is a hotel named Vivere - incidentally, it's where I had my 18th birthday (at the ballroom, on September 2002).

@vs: whoever said i was a sensible person? :P

after reading this entry again, i realize the tone about that whole dying thing was so serious. it really was supposed to be a positive thing--finding motivation to move forward in life, even small ones, like meeting a celebrity. but i guess i wasn't able to communicate it that way. -_-

anyway, i'm really glad i got to see him in person at least once, because skating competitions in my country so rarely involve international athletes like him.

Well, I think Takeshi was great. I saw him before when i saw about 10 and i saw him again last week. He's cute. I hope I'll get a chance to see him... Maybe he'll be too old at the time i'll see him.
