Re-vert

"What comes up, must come down," or so the law of Newton goes. Everything that begins must come to an end. That's just how things are, and we have no choice but to accept it. The only thing permanent in the world is change. Yes, I am, yet again, going to complain about change.

You see, there have been a lot of changes in my life lately--my being employed for instance, and that's mostly it, but just that one event has caused a kind of chain reaction that got a lot of other things in my routine to be different. For one, I get home at around 12MN every weekday and obviously, that doesn't leave a lot of time for me to do anything except sleep when I get home. And although I wouldn't have to get up until 11AM the next morning, it's not as if there's anyone I can call at their home and chat with at that time, like I would be able to if it's around 8PM. Nor is there anything good on TV I can watch as all the shows I like (Spirits, sitcoms in Star World, HBO specials) are also shown in the evenings. So for the past month, I mostly fell under a new routine that although it's not completely horrible, isn't something I really like either.

For one, I don't get to surf the net as often as I like. Sure, every now and then I get to use my dad's good laptop (like I am right now), and get away with reading fanfic at the office, but the feeling's just not the same as when I had nothing better to do but update my blog, and read articles about Takeshi, which, by the way, is one of the real reasons why I'm deciding to rant at this time.

I just saw an article last Friday (and it shames me to admit that it's been on EXPN for several weeks before I saw it) that really made me sad. Call me shallow and overreacting for feeling strongly about it as it's not as if I'm directly involved in it or anything, but I am a fan, and I believe that's reason enough to get affected.

Inline Skating is no longer an X-Games competition.

"ESPN announced March 1 that Aggressive Inline Skating would no longer be featured as a full competition in the X Games," the article said, and I couldn't keep myself from frowning. Because that means "no more Takeshi", or there could still be, as they're still featuring an in-line exhibition by the best skaters (and of course, the Yasutokos are included) in X-Games 11 (2005), and there would still be competitions in other "regions that have a strong inline presence" (which, I believe is everywhere else but the US), but not in the same way as there was last year. And so it's not nearly as exciting enough.

Sure, maybe the US has a point when they made the decision to take out the in-line competition--it doesn't generate as much profit as the other sports do in their country. And it would be a bit stupid to continue operating at a loss. But still, it's upsetting how business-y the US can get, even in things that you at first thought was something they made for people to have fun, and not just to make a profit, such as the X-Games.

Wasn't the whole point of expanding the X-Games was so the sports it includes could progress? Because although they're challenging and require as much skill and training (maybe even more) as the normal sports the world has always had--basketball, soccer, golf, etc., they don't really get as much attention. The X-Games was supposed to provide more opportunities for the athletes of those sports (moto-x, bmx, skating, etc.) because they obviously weren't being acknowledged by anyone else, right? So why suddenly take something out that has been a part of the X-Games almost since it began?

What happens to the athletes now? It's not as if there's another network as big as ESPN that would give them the same opportunities. Especially not in their own countries as most of the inline-skating athletes are not from the US. But then, that's the real reason ESPN took out the in-line skating events, isn't it? Because it's not doing anything to the US' popularity, except maybe undermine it. Because in-line skating sometimes shows that people from other countries can be better than Americans, the organizers felt threatened that they won't be able to display their superiority anymore, and so they decided that since they have the power to do so anyway, and because it does not generate as much profit as the other sports, then they would just scrap it off the competition and leave the athletes hanging in mid-air.

I don't know but somehow, to me, it seems more insulting that in-line skaters are now only going to be competing in the events smaller than the X-Games, rather than having the sport taken out of the system completely. I mean, the reason that it's kept because it's still money-making in some places, is now just so obvious. ESPN didn't even try to mask their commercialism and say something that makes them sound like they genuinely appreciate the sport for what it is and not just because it has a lot of fans. Or maybe they did and I'm just too biased against them right now that I didn't see it, but anyway, the point is, they took it out because it supposedly "isn't growing at the rate of [their] other sports." But how can it if they take it out of the competition circuit?

It's not the Yasutokos' fault they wanted to be the best and became that, for several years running. I mean, Tony Hawk's been the best skateboarder for like, forever and you don't hear anyone in ESPN talking about taking out skateboarding as well. Of course, Tony Hawk's retired now, but when he wasn't, he pretty much won all the medals too, and isn't that one of the reasons the sport's growth is hindered?

It just sucks because the in-line skating vert competition is almost the only event that Team Asia gets the highest score in during the Global X-Games, and it's when, for a few moments the audience gets to think that there might be a chance of beating the US, but I guess that's not gonna happen now. I think ESPN must've really hated that part as I have this theory that the whole reason for Global X-Games was to again demonstrate the Americans' superiority over others because it's so obvious that they're going to win anyway--they have the most no. of athletes, and although Europe comes close, they're still just not the same number. I mean, come on. How can you expect Team Asia or South America to win when the athletes representing those teams are really mostly just from Japan and Brazil, and not, all the countries of the 2 continents?

How insecure is America anyway that despite everyone already knowing that they have all the money, they have to repeatedly show off that they're a world super power? And not just in war and politics but even things as irrelevant as sports, and not even all sports, but a teensy-weensy branch of it--the X-Games, as well?

And there again goes my mind, which I think only IS students like me would be able to relate to. I don't know but knowing more about the world just really made me dislike the US. I don't know if that makes me racist or what. I don't think so. I mean, I do have specific reasons for not liking that country, so it's not irrational. And I don't think they're in any way inferior, just really arrogant and too conceited for my taste.

Suddenly, the intro and title of this entry doesn't seem to make sense anymore. I really was just going to say that since I read the article, I've reverted back to my hobby of researching about Takeshi and my old routine of updating my blog at the wee hours of the morning (which is what I'm doing right now), at least until the holy week ends (that's actually today) and I have to go back to work again.

Hi there,

Found your blog when I was looking for "Inline Philippines". Yep, indeed, its a sad thing for inline with the removal from the X Games. Do you skate or know of people who do inline? I'm looking for people who I could skate with. Went to Stoked in Alabang last Sat but the people there are all into skateboards. Medyo naiilang ako. hehe.
