Book Review: Alamat ng Gubat
You might want to brush up on your knowledge of Filipino before you read this one, and I don't just mean the Tagalog language. The story itself is easy enough to understand, despite the use of deep and complicated Tagalog words, although thre are a lot of references to the Philippine culture when it comes to dialogue and the reasons why some characters behave the way they do.
I guess it's kind of like George Orwell's Animal Farm though since I've never read that, I can't say for sure. But they are similar when it comes to animals involved in a power struggle, having satirical implications to the society.
Honestly? I didn't really understand the whole book. I mean, I'm pretty sure that at some parts they were already talking about the inefficiencies of the government or at least the hypocrisies of politicians but, what do I know about that?
All I got was that a small crab left the ocean and went into the forest in search of a " puso ng saging" he needed in order to cure his father's (who happened to be 'king') sickness. Along the way, he met several animals--a dog, a turtle, a duck, a frog, etc. all of whom claimed to be helping him as his friend but really didn't get him any closer to his goal. Or maybe they did, but not without getting him to go around in circles first. Eventually a fight broke out among all the animals, leaving the crab alone and still without the "puso ng saging". He lastly ran into a monkey who told him that if he was looking for bananas, he really should've approached the monkeys first, as they're the ones who are most likely to know. Anyway, their chat made the crab realize how miserable life would be if the forest animals just kept on doing what they did (fighting against each other) and he made a speech about making a change in the society. The monkey then reminded him of the responsibility that would fall on his shoulders, and offered him the "puso ng saging" which happened to be, in this story, a sort of painkiller, that numbs the senses so you wouldn't see or hear or feel anything wrong or bad. The crab was given the chance whether to eat it and live in ignorant bliss, or continue with his plans of changing the world for the better.
As I'm all for promoting local products (especially those worth promoting, such as books and CDs), I'm not going to tell you the ending here, and instead just say that the book is orange, the illustrations are in full color, and costs P100.00--and that's more than most books can say.
Even if you're not very interested in political satire, parts of this book can still be funny. The pictures are entertaining, and like most of Bob Ong's books, although it all seems like a joke, there are still lessons to be found within its pages. I think it's worth my money, so it's probably worth yours as well.
